Probing structure development during 3-D printing while “operando” using scattering methods with X-ray synchrotron radiation

The performance of simultaneous X-ray scattering at Small Angles (SAXS) and at Wide Angles with synchrotron radiation can be used to characterize structure development during “operando” 3D printing Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF). The performance of the set-up can be successfully applied to evaluate crystallization of 3D printed thermoplastic polymers [1,2]. The real time evolution of the crystallization and molecular orientation of different parts of the printed specimen can be evaluated with resolution below 50 μm. This evaluation can be useful in order to minimized structural modifications due to the post printing crystallization that eventually will proceed during storage in the case of polymers with glass transition below room temperature.
