Irreversible adsorption and crystallization in ferroelectric polymer thin films

The formation of thin films of semicrystalline polymers onto solid substrates is of crucial importance for a myriad of industrially relevant processes. The adsorption of polymer chains from solutions onto a solid surface has been extensively studied both from theoretical and experimental approaches. If the polymer is crystallizable, crystallization occurs simultaneously with the film formation. Among different processing methods for fabrication of large area coatings, dip coating is widely employed both academically and industrially. However, from a fundamental point of view, the study of adsorption and crystallization of polymer chains onto substrates by dip coating presents several challenges. The system is not in equilibrium, and the solution is affected by shear forces whose magnitude depends on the withdrawal speed. In this work we study the irreversible adsorbed layer formed in dip coated films of a ferroelectric polymer based on polyvinylidene-fluoride onto silicon substrates, and the role of these adsorbed layers on the crystallization of the polymer thin films.
